What is Double glazed

Double glazed windows are windows that are made up of two panes of glass within the same window frame. Between the two panes of glass is a gap that can be anywhere from 6mm to 12mm wide. The gap is filled with standard air or it can be filled with a special gas such as argon. Double glazing can be fitted to many different types of windows including sliding, open able, curtain wall, double hung, fixed, and more.

Advantages

The advantages of double glazed windows are:

  1. Double glazed: Double glazing means you will enjoy a more comfortable home environment – due to the thermal effects. Your home will be cooler in summer, and warmer in winter.
  2. Energy cost savings. The airtight construction of double glazed windows creates thermal insulation. This reduces the flow of incoming and outgoing heat. Less energy is used to heat up or cool down the space, resulting in lower energy bills.
  3. Heat Proofing. Moisture on a warm surface forms droplets of water, which freeze into frost. This can make the room feel colder, which forces the people inside to adjust the heat. The air between the two panes of glass, plus the airtight seal, prevents condensation from building up by blocking moisture in cold weather.

Warmer in winter: Double glazing is the ideal form of insulation, with up to 50-70% of home heat lost through single-glazed windows. Double glazing also helps capture and store a higher percentage of the natural heat from the winter sun.

Cooler in summer: Double glazing insulates your home against extremes of temperature, trapping some of the summer sun’s rays and minimizing the heat which burns through your windows on hot, sunny days.

Sound proofing. Double glazed windows improve sound insulation by creating a barrier between the home and the environment outside. : Double gazing reduces noise for a calmer, quieter home. High performance double glazing can reduce outside noise by up to 60%, making it a great investment if you live by a busy road or beneath a flight path.

Safety. Double glazed windows are tougher to break than single pane windows, so they increase the security of the home. Because they’re sealed tighter than other windows, it is also tougher to force them open from the outside. It’s more difficult to break double glazed windows, particularly if you include laminated or toughened glass.
